There are 9 riders on each team. Does this mean that 1 rider gets to room alone? What happens if someone leaves the Tour? Do the roommate assignments then change?

Interesting question. I actually never thought about that, and I am not sure (I am the site editor and not part of the daily stages). But I will try and ask.

Ok, so here are answers to the roommate questions:
It’s the sports directors that decides who become room mates during the Tour as well as other races. The sports directors will of course make sure the riders have a great relationship with their room mate since they have to live together during 3 stressfull weeks. It has happened that they change things around during a race if they feel a younger rider needs the support of an older rider for whatever reason.
During this years Tour it has been the two Danish riders Nicki Sørensen and Chris Anker Sørensen, the two Schleck brothers, Fabian Cancellara and Stuart O’Grady, Kurt-Asle Arvesen and Jens Voigt who lived together while the Swedish time trial specialist Gustav Larsson have been living alone.
Next race everything could be changed up.
