a message from jens voigt
Jens Voigt is still in the hospital after his crash on stage 16. Considering the circumstances he is doing very well and will be back on the bike soon enough to race again this year. Here’s a clip for all the Voigt fans out there. Thanks for the support and you can be sure that Jens is watching stage 20 on TV with his fingers crossed.

Thanks for the update. There are many of us concerned about your crash. Rest up and keep that great attitude. As you know, most of us American cycling fans will trade you for Lance any day. You are way more fun.
All the best to you and your family.

It is good to see that you are okay. It is good to see your fighting spirit in action. You are one tough dude! I have always admired your drive and the way that you attack. Bummed you didn’t get to finish the tour and bummed I didn’t get to hear Phil and Paul continue to talk about “Big Jens Voigt sacrificing himself like the true champion he is”! Dear Jens:
It is with relief that I both see and hear you describe your condition. It was disturbing to hear of your fall and to view close-up pictures of you lying in the street.
Those pictures did not have to be taken. Over and above the Tour De France, I understand you are married and have several children. It is wonderful to know that you will not be departing from them anytime soon. We both know what is most important in life.
Heal and persevere.

Mensch Jens, du machst Sachen! Der letzte Held des Sports fällt. Hmm… Macht mich nachdenklich!
Good Job!
Vielleicht machst du ja was draus.
Also, alles, alles, alles erdenklich Gute für dich.

Hey Jens,
It’s great to see you are recovering and we all look forward to seeing you back racing soon!
If you really need a nice recovery race, there’s always the Tour of Southland over here in New Zealand early in November – great crosswinds, driving hail, really character-building stuff… I think you’d love it!

On the other hand… just looking at him made my face hurt.

I can’t believe how rugged you are. I’ve been nursing a sore shoulder for months after falling of my bike at 10 miles an hour. I have not had the guts to get back on–excuses excuses excuses. Well, in your honor, I’m getting back on the bike tomorrow.
Carefully, though.
You start out a bit slowly too, please, and especially no solo training for a while. A brain bleed is no joke.
I hope you’re serious about riding for another year, BTW. You seem as hungry to be on the bike as ever, which makes me so relieved! Any chance you’ll be well enough for the Giro Di Lombardia?

Jens, So glad to finally hear that you are OK and not badly hurt. When we watched your accident it brought back my simular accident. I wreck on fathers day after going over a railroad track with hole big enough for my front wheel to fall in. Bike stayed I landed 15 feet up the road on my face and shoulder. Broken jaw, fractured cheek bones and eye socket with a face that looked about like yours. Only difference is my 58 year old body isn’t healing quite as fast as yours. Good luck in your recovery and glad to see you are going to do TDF at least one more time. Can’t have Lance get all the press. Ernie

I have always thought you were one of the best, classiest riders. I even picked up the DVD about CSC and their tour efforts with the special segment at the end, I saw this some time ago.
I was really concerned watching you crash, I just took a header a bit over a year ago but at only half the speed. Those types of wrecks can be bad.
I am glad you are healing well. Perhaps when you feel better you can go find the guy in the neutral Mavic car and teach him how to change a wheel. You were robbed.

Jens, you are my favourite rider out of everyone! While we are focused on the big names of the sport we are sad to see such a work horse like you get overshadowed. We wish you a speedy recovery and hope your family is also doing well.
We have been recreational riders and cycling fans for over 10 years now, and often ask each other which member of the pro peloton would we like to have to our home for dinner. The answer is always Jens Voight. Of course your family can come too!

Hi Jens,
I saw a set of pictures of the TDF on a website. One was of you on the road right after your crash, and a comment was that “It broke my heart”. I feel exactly the same.
Your racing was the very best of the entire tour, the next was George Hincapie.
Tour racing is a team sport.

Just saw your postcard- great to see that you are doing well. Thanks for the communique! Was so relieved to see you doing well after such an awful crash I saw the sparks, but you are too tough to be hurt badly. I am a man with few heroes, but you are certainly one of them. In response to “Mike” who left the first post:
—————————–
“As you know, most of us American cycling fans will trade you for Lance any day. You are way more fun.”
—————————–
“[...]most” of us would not trade in an amazing seven tdf wins and best rider of all time. It sounds like you would, yet “most” would not. Including Jens’ from comments in numerous interviews referring to Lance: http://www.pezcyclingnews.com/?pg=fullstory&id=2834&status=
That needed to be said.
Jens,
I wish you the best and a speedy recovery. You are hands down one of the most valued riders of your era and constant in the peloton. Your work ethic and positive attitude are much more than inspiring. You are proven; here’s a big thanks from a big fan. It is a shame that you could not finish the tour this year. I heard that you may be entertaining retiring to spend more time with your family. What ever you decide, I and I’m sure others wish you and yours the best.
Best Regards,
Robert
